Webelos-ree 2006 at Camp Babcock-Hovey
October 7, 2006

Thirteen of our Webelos attended this years’ Webelos-Ree! Seven scouts and their parents spent the night in tents. Our tent site was awesome and the food was GREAT!! We ate like kings! Our entre’ was Beef with potatoes, carrots, onions & peppers with various seasonings! It was served on a bed of aluminum foil-a.k.a. foil dinner! Drinks were “bug-juice and milk. For dessert later on around our campfire, we had “slugs-on-a-stick” led by Nate and we had cake made in our very own dutch oven. Preparation for this was accomplished by Jeremy B. We sang songs and did skits around our campfire with the other pack in our site. For breakfast we had our now famous “Eggs-in-a-Bag”, Honey-nut Cheerios, bananas and apples. We drank coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice and milk.

The boys had various tasks that they were responsible for such as: water duty, food prep., campfire prep., washing and drying the dishes, cleanup, setting up their own tents and of course-HAVING FUN!! Some of the scouts also led the closing ceremonies on Sunday.

Each of the boys learned how to start a fire without matches using a flint stone and a piece of steel to create a spark to ignite dryer lint!

All of the boys got to shoot at targets with a real BB gun-COOL!! They also got to practice their Robin Hood techniques at archery. They learned how to work together to accomplish various tasks at “Initiative Games”. They were able to put together a model car. They learned to tie knots such as the “Rescue knot” known as the Bowline knot and the “Joining knot” known as the Square not. They prepared & cooked an apple concoction on an open bed of hot coals and got to eat it a short time later. The boys also attended a class on land navigation where they learned their “pace-count”. They learned how to identify various features on a topographical map and even used a compass to “shoot” an azimuth!

All in all, it was a picture-perfect weekend for this SUPER event and I believe the boys had a wonderful time! You Tigers, Wolves and Bears are in for a real treat when it’s your turn to be a Webelos!!
